Since settling in South Africa in 1990, Argentinian-born engineer Billy Hughes, wanted to make his own wine so in the year 2000 he bought a piece of land in Malmesbury, naming it Kasteelsig Vineyards. 27ha of this prime property is now under vine, occupying a cool east-facing slope overlooking the Kasteelberg mountain with the rural hamlet of Riebeek-Kasteel at its base
Billy’s farming interest grew from visiting wine farms as a boy in Mendoza with his father, an agricultural engineer. He drives all aspects of his wine venture, from the vineyards, winemaking, blending and bottling, whilst his wife Penny, who hails from the hospitality, retail & travel industries, covers sales, marketing and distribution.
The name NATIVO encompasses allusions to Billy’s native origins, his progress to becoming a naturalised South African and desire to produce a wine reflective of its source in a natural environment infused with site-specific characteristics.
NATIVO is recognised by the minimalist label which features an embossed, subtly elliptical circle alluding to a sense of coming full circle, as in the case of the Hughes family and its wines.
